Tape Baking

There are some types of tape (mostly Ampex and 3M) recorded in the 70's, 80's & 90's that suffer from what's called "sticky shed syndrome". This is where the adhesive that holds the iron particles to the plastic tape absorbs moisture and goes "sticky". This can cause the iron particles on one layer to stick to the back of the next layer of tape in the reel. If the tape is played, the tape can shed the particles onto the heads and rollers of the tape machine and can also stick and pull itself apart, losing some or all of the data on it. The way to solve this problem is to bake the tape at a low temperature for about a day to remove the moisture. Some large reels and cassettes need disassembling to be able to let the moisture evaporate. The tape can then be played for a peroid somewhere between a week and a month to get the data off, before it goes sticky again. If you book a transfer and your tapes are either vintage Ampex or 3M, they will definitely be baked. Other brands are assessed upon arrival.
